Cogra Moss - Lake District Walk
Wednesday 8th November 2023
Today I was hoping to get the one summit between myself and John completing Birkett's Loweswater Fells group. The fell is notorious for a certain farmer, whom we encountered last time we tried to visit this summit, so the plan was to approach it from a different direction and see if it was easier to access this time. We were joined on the walk by our friends Roger Hiley his partner Loes and the dogs Dylan and Dougal.
Start: Felldyke car park (NY 0851 1987)
Route: Felldyke car park - Cogra Moss - Felldyke car park
Distance: 2.75 miles Ascent: 104 metres Time Taken: 1 hr
Terrain: Easy paths
Weather: Blue sky
Pub Visited: Kirkstile Inn Ale Drunk: Cumbrian Ales Esthwaite Bitter

From the start of the walk today's target High Hows comes into view. Now if we can only reach that gate halfway up the fell we can finally finish the Loweswater Fells.

It is easy walking from the car park along the Water Board track to Cogra Moss.

We soon reach Cogra Moss and compared to our last visit here there has been a fair bit of tree felling, especially on the lower slopes of Blake Fell.

Low Pen is also in view, one of those fells we seem to have unintentionally visited a few times.

Loes leads the way along the new (to us) path around Cogra Moss. Now if we could just find a gate into the fields to our left we might tick that fell off.

After gaining access to one field it appeared that access to the next field would be a bit more tricky so we opted for Plan B and a walk around Cogra Moss instead. Here we follow the new path through the felled trees towards Low Pen.

Roger tells us that the trees that have been cleared were all diseased larch trees, although a few larch trees still remain to add some autumunal colour to the scene.

The new path offers us a different view of Cogra Moss to the ones we have seen on previous visits here.

As we rejoin the older tracks around the reservoir the summit of High Hows comes back into view.

Owsen Fell can be seen between the trees on the other side of Cogra Moss.

Heading back along the track Dougal looks like he thinks it is time we all got a move on and stopped taking photos.

With a final look at High Hows we head back to Roger's for cake and tea before we visit the Kirkstile Inn for food and drinks.
